Speech - What's in it?

There is more to speech than words. My research is about detecting and using non-linguistic information in speech and human vocalizations. My colleague, Joel MacAuslan, and I have developed software based on the Stevens landmark theory to extract features in utterances.
In this presentation, I will introduce computer speech analysis and some of the applications we have developed. These include detecting emotion in adult speech, detecting diagnostic information in infant pre-speech utterances, and providing visual feedback to encourage pre-speech vocalization.
