Information Visualization - Techniques and Applications

Carole Hafner
March 7, 2005

Work on information visualization can be classified into two categories: inventing visualization techniques and tools, and developing useful applications.

This talk will be introductory in nature: it will define the goals and component steps in designing information visualizations, and review some well-known visualization techniques: from simple 2D and 3D charts, tree and network diagrams, and information landscapes, to complex constructions such as permutation matrices and treemaps. We will then consider dynamic visualization techniques: dynamic queries, magic lens and tighly-coupled displays, and dynamic fisheye views. We will end up by discussing applications, in particular applications to visualizing sets of documents.
